 About

Dan McCarty High School

Dan McCarty High was built in 1953, with the first year of graduates in 1954. That class transfered from the old Ft. Pierce High ( last graduating class was 1953) , where they attended their earlier high school years. In the earlier years all the schools were segregated.
The classes of 1958, and 1959, were the first classes and only classes, to have a full four years at Dan McCarty High School. In 1960, it was changed back to house the 10th, 11th, and 12th grades.
When the new Fort Pierce Central High School was built, the building was given to the middle school, there after refered to as Dan McCarty Middle School.
In the summer of 2000 the old Dan McCarty High School was torn down and was replaced by a two story structure for Dan McCarty Middle School. The gym and one other building are the only buildings remaining of what was Dan McCarty High School.

Who was Dan McCarty?

Perhaps the most famous graduate of the Fort Pierce  Delaware Avenue school was Daniel Thomas McCarty, the thirty -first Governor of Florida. He attended grade school, junior high, and senior high school there. While in high school, he enjoyed great success as both a student and athlete. He was captain of the football team, editor-in-chief of the year book, and vice-president of his class. A quote from the 1930 yearbook described his as “The captain of our school ship of state–and how able a captain.”

McCarty went on to become a citrus grower and beef cattleman in Fort Pierce. He served as St. Lucie County Representative in the 1937, 1939, and 1941 sessions of the Florida House (during the 1941 session he was Speaker of the House). After being runner-up for the Democratic Gubernatorial nomination in 1948, he was elected Governor in 1952. He suffered a disabling heart attack on February 25, 1953, and died September 28, 1953. The new high school, built in 1954, was named Daniel T. McCarty High School in his honor.
